Vietnam offers an intoxicating blend: vibrant yet traditional cities, an unashamedly idyllic coastline, incredible scenery, pulsating history & culture, & delectable cuisine. Over two decades have passed since Vietnam was officially united & today this gracious & graceful country is an outstanding travel destination.
Our holiday begins in Hanoi where we stay for 2 nights in the 4 star Hotel Maison D’Hanoi. Our visit includes a water puppet show that depicts the past & mainly rural life-style of the Vietnamese thousands of years ago; a tricycle ride around the old quarter; a drive through the peaceful countryside to the World heritage site of Halong Bay where we board a large wooden Junk to sail around some of the 3000 big & small islands that make up this beautiful bay.
On day 3 we fly to Hue where we stay at the 4 star Century Riverside Hotel & enjoy a half day orientation tour & board one of the ‘Dragon Boats’ from the Pier & sail down the serene & scenic Perfume river to a promontory to visit the Thien Mu Pagoda, built in 1601. We tour the Forbidden City & see the Great Cast Bell & the Stele high on the back of a marble tortoise & then head for the Tomb of Emperor Tu Duc where there is plenty of opportunity to walk through shops & a local market for souvenirs.
On day 4 we drive from Hue to Danang where we visit the Cham Museum before having lunch. We visit the ancient town of Hoi An where we stay at the 4 star Hoi An Beach Resort & Spa. This town is well preserved & was elected as one of the 5 World Heritage Sites in Vietnam. On day 5 we can enjoy a completely free day to explore Hoi An at leisure.
On day 6 we fly to Saigon where we stay at the 4 star Duxton Hotel. We start with a half day familiarisation tour of Ho Chi Minh City, (formerly Saigon) the bustling commercial capital of Vietnam. There are many highlights such as the Unification Palace, War Museum, Central Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral, City Hall & Ben Thanh Market for shopping.
On day 7 we go to the Cu Chi Tunnels which are a network of underground tunnels, made famous as underground military bases. This is our chance to see the life-style of those valiant fighters that lived in the tunnels during the Vietnam War & see demonstrations of torture gear & traps! We will also taste the steamed manioc-compressed rice with sesame & salt. In the afternoon we have a tour of Tay Ninh town, the capital of Tay Ninh province, which serves as the headquarters of one of Vietnam’s most interesting indigenous religions, Cao Daism. The Cao Dai Temple is one of the most striking structures in Asia.
On day 8 we go to the Mekong Delta - Vietnam’s Rice Bowl, for a full day tour where we visit the 120 year old Vinh Trang Pagoda followed by a fruit plantation where we can sample delicious & exotic tropical fruits while watching & listening to traditional music. We’ll watch & taste the coconut candies being made & enjoy a local lunch of elephant ear fish.
On day 9 we fly to Singapore where we’ll enjoy a 3 hour tour that takes us overland & through water to make sure we’re soaked with culture & everything that’s fantastic about Singapore. We visit Kampong Glam - originally a fishing village at the mouth of the Rochor River & the historic seat of Malay royalty; drive through the Colonial district for a view of Parliament House, the imposing Supreme Court & City Hall that overlooks the Padang. We will make time to enjoy a Singapore Sling in the Long Bar of Raffles Hotel! There are showers, a cinema, a swimming pool, plenty of shops & chill out lounges etc in Singapore airport to entertain everyone before we board our return flight to London!
