The Household Cavalry Museum is a living museum within Horse Guards in Whitehall, one of the city’s most historic buildings. Dating from 1750 it is still the headquarters of the Household Division in which the Household Cavalry has performed the Queen’s Life Guard in a daily ceremony that has remained unchanged for over 350 years & we begin our day by watching the impressive ‘Changing of the Queen’s Life Guard’.

Our private guided tour begins in the 18th century working stable block where we can see the horses being brought in, groomed, fed & watered, their hooves oiled & shoes checked, their saddles adjusted ready to go on guard or the stables being cleared or washed down. Both horses & riders go through a rigorous & demanding training & we will hear first hand accounts of what this training is like & the techniques the soldiers use to master their horses & complete the gruelling preparations for regimental inspections.
We proceed to the museum within the historic Horse Guards building which affords a behind-the-scenes look at the work that goes into the ceremonial duties & operational role of the Household Cavalry regiments which make up the Queen's official guards. Their story is told through a collection of ceremonial uniforms, royal standards, gallantry awards, musical instruments, horse furniture & silverware amassed over 350 years of serving the Royal family. The experience comes alive with compelling personal stories, interactive displays and stunning rare objects – many on public display for the first time.

Following this visit our other private guide leads us to the Churchill Museum & Cabinet War Rooms for our next tour. Located in the Treasury building’s basement in Whitehall this is one of the most historically important sites in wartime politics & it was from here that Churchill directed WWII; many of the displayed artefacts are exactly as they were left when the war ended in 1945. The Cabinet War Rooms were Churchill's underground wartime headquarters from 1939 to 1945, preserved as they were left in August 1945. The museum is dedicated to the life & achievements of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (1874-1965) covering his political career, his previous occupations as a soldier & a journalist & his personal interests - he was a talented artist & enjoyed going to the races. Many of his trademark props, including a cigar & his red siren suit, are on display. There is also a fascinating new exhibition to enjoy ‘Undercover – Life in Churchill’s Bunker’.

Lunchtime beckons & it's just a short walk to Bistro 51 for a delicious meal. This stylish brasserie near St James' Park, serves delicious classic French & British food in a lively & informal atmosphere. It is the perfect place to relax, dine in style & discuss our morning’s adventures.
