KENSINGTON PALACE + ROYAL ALBERT HALL + ALBERT MEMORIAL Private Guided Tours + Lunch at ARCADIA
London SW7 2AP
We begin our day with a tour of the Royal Albert Hall where we will experience the excitement inside one of the most famous entertainment venues in the world! Our engaging guide will take us on a personal journey through this iconic building, bringing to life the Hall's fascinating history & sharing some of its secrets. This tour covers all front of house areas including the auditorium & the Queen's suite & the Royal Retiring Room. As the Royal Albert Hall is a working venue, each tour is unique & may include opportunities to see rehearsals or the technical preparations for a show.
After our tour we will be joined by our own tour guide Tim Hudson who will lead us to the £11.2M restoration of the Albert Memorial to hear about the creation of this Victorian extravaganza & tour round it to see the details of the Parnassus frieze, parts of which are in the British Museum.
From here we take a short walk to have lunch at nearby Arcadia Restaurant in Kensington High Street, a quirky fun yet formal restaurant. With theatrical owners & their talkative pet parrots, a warm colour scheme of rustic reds & greens, Monet-style murals of poplars & scrumptious food a good time is forecast.
When we have finished Tim will lead us to Kensington Palace where Queen Victoria was born & later received the news of her accession. While Kensington Palace is undergoing a £12 million major transformation project the Palace has become ‘The Enchanted Palace’ in a unique multisensory exhibition combining fashion, performance & dazzling spectacle to reveal the magnificent State Apartments in a magical new light. Tim will give us an informative talk about the palace before we enter the State Apartments.
In the sumptuous State Apartments, leading fashion designers Vivienne Westwood, William Tempest, Stephen Jones, Boudicca, Aminaka Wilmont & illustrator/set designer Echo Morgan create spectacular installations in collaboration with WILDWORKS, taking inspiration from Kensington Palace & the princesses who once lived there - Mary, Anne, Caroline, Charlotte, Victoria, Margaret and Diana. These designs are displayed alongside historic items from the Royal Collection & Kensington Palace's Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection, together with two dresses worn by Diana, Princess of Wales & Princess Margaret.
The complex & mysterious world of the royal court opens up through spectacular installations, interactive theatre, intimate storytelling, soundscapes, haunting film projections & a series of intriguing clues hidden throughout the historic rooms, revealing tales of love & hate, surprise & sadness, secrets & jealousy. Each room has a powerful story to tell about Kensington Palace's former royal residents & the life of the court - a world within a world, with its own time and rituals.
A truly wonderful way to spend a festive season Sunday.
